So you used ChatGPT to write a blog post… I can tell.

I want to start by taking a wild guess where you’re at with writing your SEO blogs:

  • You don’t have time
  • You’ve got no clue what to say
  • You’re staring at a blank page thinking, ‘Hell no’ (perhaps swearing a bit), and wondering if AI can do it for you

So you take a deep breath, hop online, and ask ChatGPT to write it for you.

Magic happens! You’ve suddenly got an 800-word blog about how ‘consistency is key in social media marketing’. It’s done, it’s dusted.

But it kinda sounds like a microwave manual.

I’m not here to shame you. I totally get it. I’ve even trained my little AI buddy to think like me – a terrifying yet strangely adorable achievement.

But if you’re letting AI write all of your blog copy with no human cleanup – it shows. And unless your dream audience is a boardroom full of bots and jargon collectors – that’s not a vibe – especially if you’re hoping to show up on Google and connect with real humans.

So, let’s unpack the problem and figure out how to make AI your assistant – not your ghostwriter.

The irresistible charm of our AI Robot Overlords

I like to think of tools like ChatGPT as the world’s most eager interns.

And boy, are they fast to learn! They don’t take breaks. They don’t question your weird prompts. They’ll have strangely humanish convos with you. And they spit out content in seconds. Boom – blog done.

And honestly? That’s amazing and a tad mindblowing!

But here’s the thing – like a packet of two-minute noodles, the end result is technically food, but it’s missing…actual flavour, real texture and soul. (It also leaves you a bit bloated, but that’s a different story).

Signs your SEO blog was written by a toaster

I read a lot. Mainly true crime, but also a lot of blogs. And if I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen one start with, ‘In today’s fast-paced digital world’, I wouldn’t be writing this blog. I’d be sipping a fruity cocktail on my private island.

Here’s how I know when an AI intern has been left unsupervised to go rogue with a blog post:

  • It honestly says nothing. It’s 800 words of filler with no flavour.
  • It explains dumb things you don’t need an explanation for (e.g. the history of hashtags)
  • It sounds like it’s never had a real convo with a human (because it hasn’t)
  • It drops cliches like it’s hot (once an amazing song…) – cutting edge, synergy, effectiveness
  • It has zero personality. You could swap the brand name, and it could be anyone – or no one.

The bottom line is that if your blog reads like a chatbot’s high school essay, your audience will clock it immediately.

Want your SEO blog to rank and resonate?

Writing a decent blog isn’t just about keywords and good grammar. It’s about sounding human and writing for your ideal audience (and I assume they’re real humans).

That’s the magic trick every good blog copywriter learns – blending strategy with sass, SEO with soul.

And yes, it helps 100% if they’re also SEO copywriters, like me. Wink, Wink.

How to use AI without sounding like AI

I don’t think it’s a secret, but I was once fully anti-AI. It was a hard no for me (just like people trying to convince me that birds are cute, not evil).

Last year, I decided to give it a whirl. I didn’t hate it. Wow, that feels weird to admit out loud!

So I’m no longer here to bag out ChatGPT. In fact, I used it to brainstorm this blog. And you’re still here reading, so we’re good yeah?

But, I’ve learnt the trick to AI.

Mini Mon Brain (yes, I’ve named it) is my intern. I can give her a rough brief, let her have a go (heck, we all need to start somewhere), and then fix the living hell out of it!

Here’s how:

  • Write as you speak and use your voice. Say words you’d use and swear if that’s on brand.
  • Add your personal stories that AI can’t – inject that funny thing that happened on your Bali trip or when you wrote a killer newsletter on no sleep after a big night on the town.
  • Cut the waffle and delete all the filler. Just never cut out Belgian waffles – they’re the bomb!
  • Don’t over-polish your writing. You’re not at school, and no one’s going to scribble red pen all over your work.
  • No matter how silly this feels, read it out loud. If it sounds like a CEO giving a TEDx talk on ‘innovation’, start again (unless that’s your vibe).

Will your AI-assisted blog pass the vibe check?

Spoiler: mine didn’t. At first, then again, and again…Argh.

I love and always use Copyleaks to check my writing.

Today, I initially got slapped with 100% AI, then 80%, and then it kept going down until I hit 0. And this was despite writing, rewriting, humanising, Mon-ifying. It’s hard bloody work!

And honestly? That’s another valid point to consider. Detection tools don’t always get it right.

You can write something funny, personal, punchy – and still get tagged because it’s too polished. Or because you used a pattern, they don’t like. Or because Grammarly got trigger-happy and edited your tone into oblivion.

So yes, use the tools. But trust your gut more than the green tick of approval.

Final thoughts from your (non-robot) SEO blog copywriter

Using AI to write isn’t the issue.

Publishing a blog that reads like it came straight from the internet bots? That’s the real drama.

Let the robot help. Just don’t let it replace you.

Because people want to read things written by people. Weird, flawed, brilliantly human people –  like you.

Need help turning your half-baked draft into something that sounds like you (but cooler and easier to read)?

I’ve got you. I’m a real-life SEO copywriter in Melbourne, and I’m here to help you write stuff that ranks and makes readers smile.

Let’s chat.

Or just say hi — I promise not to open with ‘In today’s digital age…’
